Average the display, then study the flow

Heikin Ashi means average bar. It redraws candles using calculated prices, so a sequence of the same colour can be easier to follow. Standard candles show the actual open, high, low and close for each period. Heikin Ashi shows a transformed version of those observations.

Keep this distinction in view: the HA close is an average. It is neither the actual closing price nor a guaranteed price at which you can trade.

01 · THE SAME INPUT, A DIFFERENT VIEW

Compare ordinary candles with Heikin Ashi

Both charts below use the same twelve invented periods and the same price scale. The ordinary candles alternate colour during the early rise. The averaged view makes that rise appear more continuous.

Original illustration using invented OHLC data. Every candle is calculated from the same dataset; this is not historical performance.

Look at the highlighted eighth bar. The actual close drops from 114 to 109, and the standard candle is red. The Heikin Ashi candle remains green because its calculated close still exceeds its calculated open. The ninth HA candle turns red. Smoothing can postpone a visible colour change.

02 · HOW THE CANDLE IS BUILT

Four values, with a link to the previous candle

In these examples, O, H, L and C denote actual prices. HA denotes calculated Heikin Ashi values. Use the previous HA open and close for the next HA open.

ValueCalculation
HA close(O + H + L + C) ÷ 4
HA open(Previous HA open + Previous HA close) ÷ 2
HA highLargest of actual H, HA open and HA close
HA lowSmallest of actual L, HA open and HA close

For the first candle in each comparison chart, we seed HA open with (actual O + actual C) ÷ 2. Then the recursive formula takes over. A platform may start its calculation before the visible chart, so its first displayed values can differ from this short example.

A numerical Heikin Ashi calculationBuild one averaged candlePrevious HA open = 100 · Previous HA close = 104Actual O = 104 · H = 110 · L = 101 · C = 109HA open = (100 + 104) ÷ 2 = 102HA close = (104 + 110 + 101 + 109) ÷ 4 = 106HA high = max(110, 102, 106) = 110HA low = min(101, 102, 106) = 101High 110HA close 106HA open 102Low 101Actual close = 109. HA close = 106. They are different values.

One invented period calculated explicitly. The body spans 102 to 106, while the actual close is 109.

The high and low rules keep the calculated body inside the candle. When the recursive open sits outside the actual period’s range, the HA extreme may also lie outside that real range. A HA wick is therefore not always an actual traded extreme.

03 · READ A SEQUENCE, NOT A SINGLE COLOUR

What bodies and wicks can suggest

Three Heikin Ashi candle shapesRead the body and the wicks togetherUpward persistenceNo lower wickDownward persistenceNo upper wickPause or uncertaintySmall body · both wicksConceptual shapes only. A single candle does not confirm a reversal.

Conceptual candle shapes. Colours are green for HA close above HA open and red for HA close below HA open.

Repeated green bodies with little or no lower wick describe upward persistence in the averaged series. Repeated red bodies with little or no upper wick describe downward persistence. Shrinking bodies or wicks on both sides suggest a less decisive balance.

A small body can precede a pause, continuation or reversal. Check the surrounding swings before assigning a meaning. Do not interpret a long HA upper wick exactly like rejection on an ordinary candle: the body uses different values.

Wait for the period to complete. During an open bar, the actual high, low and close can change. The HA close, shape and colour can change too.

04 · KNOW WHEN THE VIEW IS LESS HELPFUL

Sideways markets still need boundaries

Heikin Ashi in an invented sideways marketA smoother display cannot create a trendInvented sideways prices with the same calculation and seed conventionStandard candles96100104123456789101112Heikin Ashi96100104123456789101112Both views stay inside a narrow price band.Repeated colour changes and small bodies call for context, not automatic trades.

Invented sideways dataset, calculated with the same HA formulas. The small movements are enlarged by this chart’s narrower price scale.

This second dataset repeatedly returns to the same area. The HA bodies stay small, with colour changes but little sustained progress. Treating every switch as a new trend would confuse movement inside a range with movement away from it.

Mark the actual range high and low on ordinary candles. Compare any colour change with price leaving or remaining inside those boundaries. A cleaner looking chart cannot make a weak directional market stronger.

05 · BRING THE VIEW INTO YOUR ROUTINE

Observe with averages, verify with actual prices

A practical workflow with Heikin Ashi and actual pricesUse two chart views for two different jobs1 · ObserveUse Heikin Ashi todescribe persistence.2 · VerifyCheck real candles and keyprice levels.3 · PlanUse actual quotes fororders and risk.Keep the symbol, timeframe and completed bar consistent between both views.

A chart observation workflow, not an automatic entry or exit system.

If you combine this view with Ichimoku, establish whether the five lines are calculated from actual OHLC or from transformed HA values. They are different inputs and can produce different levels. Keep that choice explicit.

Use actual prices for order levels, invalidation and performance checks. A backtest filled at synthetic HA prices can present results that were not obtainable in the market.

Check your understanding

Previous HA open is 102 and previous HA close is 106. The new actual prices are O = 108, H = 112, L = 103 and C = 105. What are the four HA values? Can a green HA candle coexist with a red ordinary candle?

Reveal the answer

HA open = 104. HA close = 107. HA high = 112. HA low = 103. The HA candle is green because 107 exceeds 104. The ordinary candle is red because its actual close of 105 is below its actual open of 108. Both observations can be true.

Try it on your next chart

Place ordinary candles and Heikin Ashi beside each other for the same symbol and timeframe. Choose a completed bar, compare the colours and record both closing values. Then inspect a trending section and a sideways section before deciding when the averaged view helps your own analysis.
